Which Ball Is Best For You?

Which Ball Is Best For You?

Which golf ball is right for you? When it comes to picking the right golf ball there are many things to consider. Compression ratings, number of layers, spin rates  and more all play a good part in finding the correct ball to improve your game and help you on-course. You also have to consider the level of golfer you are, a scratch or plus handicap golfer will require their ball to different things than those who may have a higher handicap a thus its important to match the characteristics of the ball you chose to what you need.

There will be a few golfers out there who swear by using the ball theyve found in the bushes, or scooped out of the water hazard, which is fine should you just want a casual round. However, If youre serious about your game and want to see noticable improvements, then taking the time to chose the right ball to suit your game is a no-brainer.

In this deeper dive we'll look at the different handicap ranges and which balls we feel would be best suited to enable you improvement and enjoyment throughout your rounds.

New starter

At this level of golf we wouldnt reccomend that playing a specific ball will do much to your game. Price point becomes a focus as a true beginner as you unfortunately must accept that you will be losing balls due to errant shots. Anything which promotes distance could be of benefit as you learn the game and consistent contact and shot dispersion isnt quite in your wheelhouse yet - Luckily we have a few options for you that will suit this stage in your early golfing journey. Srixon Distance and Callaway Warbird are two excellent options for the brand new golfer. Both are a 2-piece construction that are designed to help the new player maximise distance by promoting a high launch with lower spin.

High Handicapper

Now you've moved from complete beginner to progressing to a point in which you have a handicap and are actually making moves to progress with your game. Of course, consistency will most likely still be an issue and thus cost must continue to be considered as one of the main buying points. Options here such as Titleists TruFeel and Velocity or Srixon's AD333 are excellent in the sense that they will keep spin low when hitting driver, enabling a more penetrating ball flight whilst still giving you that greenside spin which is key in improving your short game and saving strokes.

Mid Handicapper

As your scores start to drop lower and you reguarly find yourself breaking 90, you'll now need a bit more than distance from your ball. More consistency here is key and looking for increased short game spin to control your ball when youre within scoring range is essential. A 3-layer ball which lends itsself to be a ouch firmer, will be a better fit for now, enabling you more distance as your swing speed gets faster and more spin on the short game side of things. Srixons Q-STAR Tour, TaylorMades Tour Response and Titleists AVX are perfect for this level of golf. Of course thats not to say other balls arent suitable such as the more expensive tour level balls you'll find the lower handicapper using.

Low Handicapper

This is the level in which tour balls will come in to play. Balls such as Titleist's ProV1 & ProV1x, TaylorMade's TP5 & TP5x, Callaways Chrome Tour & Chrome Tour X and Srixons Z-Star & Z-Star Diamond all fill this category as the best in class, looking to provide high level golfers the ability to play a ball which gives them enough feel, spin and workability to enable them to play how they want without the sacrifice of any distance. With a consistent strike pattern and ball flight, the elite players will be looking for the same from their ball and thus its no wonder you will see this line-up feature week in, week out, on the PGA, DP World and LIV Tour circuits.
