Golf Base Layers
Golf can be played in all kinds of weather conditions, each one presenting their own specific set of challenges. Extremely cold days have historically been one of the hardest to equip for. When the temperature dropped in the past a golfer would be reaching for a lambswool sweater which would then possibly be underneath a windproof. This only did an average job of keeping the cold out and was extremely limited in breathability
(Read More)Over the past two decades, specialist clothing companies began to develop highly sophisticated layering systems which would revolutionise how golfers stayed warm on course. Made up of two or more thin layers this highly technical clothing kept the heat your body produced in, whilst keeping the cold out. Incredibly thin, each layer was made from stretch fabrics so even though the garments were tight-fitting they afforded the wearer full range of motion.
The bottom layer, the layer that would go directly onto the skin would be known as the base layer with each subsequent layer being worn over this. Early pioneers of the golf base layer included J Lindeberg and Galvin Green and their golf base layers set the standard for all others to follow. Base layers have now become so comfortable to wear that even on mildly cold days a base layer is often worn with just a golf polo shirt over the top. This also creates a striking look whereby you can have contrasting colour sleeves to whatever polo shirt you are wearing.
Golf base layers have become very popular with tour professionals - their living depends on being able to swing freely - and the golf base layer was the perfect solution to chilly early morning tee times.
